For a truly authentic Italian dining experience go to Cascina Respaù. This low-key restaurant could be described as a 'baita', which basically refers to a small local restaurant or kitchen tucked away in the mountains, serving home-cooked style meals to those passing through. It's about a 15 minute walk up from the main road, following a track up the hill and into the trees so really feels like you're in the middle of nowhere, but once you get to the top it all makes sense. The menu changes by the day to include fresh local produce and handmade pasta in dishes such as pesto alla Trapanese, salads, tiramisu and definitely don't go past the house wine. Incredible meal and well within a backpackers budget.
